Día de los Muertos Through the Eyes of Moni

Día de los Muertos Through the Eyes of Moni

As part of our Stunt Puppy x Luis Fitch Día de los Muertos collection, we’re sharing stories from members of Minnesota’s Mexican community about the traditions, memories, and people that make this holiday meaningful.

We sat down with Moni, who is a spanish immersion teacher, to hear what Día de los Muertos means to them and their family.

1. What does Día de los Muertos mean to you and your family?

Dia de muertos is a holiday that brings me back to my roots. While my family and I love so far from Mexico, celebrating a day like Dia de Muertos brings us closer to home, closer to our culture, and closer to our loved ones who have passed on.

2. Is there a tradition around Día de los Muertos that is especially meaningful to you?

I love building my altar at home every year. While it hurts to add a new face each year, it’s also a time to think about them and all of our happy memories together.

3. Who do you remember or celebrate during Día de los Muertos?

I remember my grandparents and aunt, my former student who was taken from this world too soon, and of course my doggy Dante.

4. What role have dogs or pets played in your family?

Pets are relatively new to my family. Growing up, times were tough and having a pet in the mix wasn’t doable. Now that I have my own life and a stable life, I have My dog Coco and have had dogs and birds in my life. My pets are my best friends, babies, and confidants!
