As part of our Stunt Puppy x Luis Fitch Día de los Muertos collection, we’re sharing stories from members of Minnesota’s Mexican community about the traditions, memories, and people that make this holiday meaningful.
We sat down with Vanessa, owner of Hola Coffee, to hear what Día de los Muertos means to them and their family.

1. What does Día de los Muertos mean to you and your family?
To me and my family, Día de Muertos is really about celebrating life. It’s a beautiful reminder that every day we have here is a gift, and an opportunity to reflect on the people and pets we’ve loved who are no longer physically with us, but whose impact is still very much a part of our lives.
I’ve also loved seeing how Día de Muertos is celebrated in different places. When I lived in Tucson, Arizona, the All Souls Procession was such a special experience. People would paint their faces, dress up, and come together in this incredible procession honoring loved ones who had passed. There’s something so powerful about an entire community gathering not simply to mourn loss, but to celebrate the lives that came before us.
Being Mexican, I love that Día de Muertos is so colorful, joyful, and full of life. It’s another beautiful way to bring friends, family, and community together.
2. Who do you remember or celebrate during Día de los Muertos?
I remember the family members and friends I’ve lost throughout my life, as well as the furry friends who have been part of my family. I don’t think the love or impact someone has on your life disappears when they pass, whether they have two legs or four. Día de Muertos gives us this really special opportunity to bring their memories forward and celebrate the role they played in making us who we are.
3. What role have dogs or pets played in your family?
I honestly don’t remember a time in my life without dogs or pets. I love animals, and they bring this incredibly special energy, spirit, and fullness to a home. Even when I’m traveling and my dogs can’t come with me, life feels a little emptier, like something important is missing.
I see that same connection in so many other people, which is part of why we’ve made pets such a meaningful part of Hola Coffee. We have our dog wall, and we welcome dogs into our space because we know they aren’t just pets, they’re family. We really honor their presence and the joy, companionship, and unconditional love they bring into people’s lives.
4. Is there something you wish more people understood about Día de los Muertos?
I wish more people understood that Día de Muertos is truly a celebration of life. Even though it translates to “Day of the Dead,” it’s about remembrance, togetherness, and celebrating how fortunate we were to share our lives with the people and animals we’ve loved. It’s colorful, bright, vibrant, and so full of culture and joy. There’s something really beautiful about taking time to say, “You were here, you mattered to me, and I still carry you with me.” I would love to see more people around the world embrace the spirit of Día de Muertos because, at its heart, it’s really about love and celebrating life.
