DIY Dog Treats

Servings: 3 dozen treats

You can’t be the only one who reaps the tasty benefits of baking, so here’s an easy recipe for a peanut butter-based dog treat that’ll make your furry friend wag their tail (and drool) like nobody’s watching. Our dogs tell us it’s so yummy, they’d bake a batch for themselves at least once a week — if they had thumbs.


  • cup pumpkin puree
  • ¼cup peanut butter*
  • 2large eggs
  • cups whole wheat flour, plus more for dusting surface


  1. Preheat the oven to 350º. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat and set aside.
  2. Combine the pumpkin puree, peanut butter, and eggs on the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment. Mix on medium speed, scraping down the sides as needed, until smooth, about 1 minute.
  3. Add 2¾ cups flour and mix on low speed until just combined. The dough should feel soft but not too sticky. If the dough sticks to your hands, add an additional 1 Tbsp of flour at a time until the dough no longer sticks.
  4. Lightly dust a flat work surface with flour. Turn the dough into the counter and knead it until smooth and slightly elastic, about 1 minute.
  5. Using a rolling pin, roll out the dough to ¼ inch thick. Using a small cookie cutter, about 2 inches in diameter, cut out the desired shapes and place the treats 1 inch apart on the prepared baking sheet. Reroll the leftover dough as needed to cut out more treats. Note: If you don’t want to bake all the treats at once, you can freeze the dough on a parchment lined pan, then transfer them to a ziplock bag and store in the freezer for up to 1 month.
  6. When ready to bake the treats, place the prepared baking sheet in the oven and bake until the treats puff up and the edges are golden brown, about 20-22 minutes.
  7. Remove the pan from the oven and let cool for 5 minutes before transferring the treats to a wire rack to cool completely. Store the treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.
